  • UPDATED -Chapters have been re-organized for the first time since thetext’s original publication. The network layer, which had been previouslycovered in a single chapter, is now covered in Chapter 4 (which focuses on theso-called “data plane” component of the network layer) and Chapter 5 (whichfocuses on the network layer’s “control plane”). This expanded coverage of thenetwork layer reflects the swift rise in importance of software-definednetworking (SDN), arguably the most important and exciting advance innetworking in decades.
  • UPDATED - Individualchapters have been updatedto reflect changes in thefield of computer networking:

o   Chapter 1 has been updated to reflect the ever-growing reach and useof the internet.

o   Chapter 2, which covers the application layer, has been significantlyupdated. Material on the FTP protocol has been removed, and hash tables havebeen distributed to make room for a new section on application-level videostreaming and content distribution networks, together with Netflix and YouTubecase studies. The socket programming sections have been updated from Python 2to Python 3.

o   Chapter 3, which covers the transport layer, has been modestlyupdated. The material on asynchronous transport mode (ATM) networks has beenreplaced by more modern material on the internet’s explicit congestionnotification (ECN), which teaches the same principles.

o   Chapter 4 covers the “data plane” component of the network layer — theper-router forwarding function that determines how a packet arriving on one ofa router’s input links is forwarded to one of that router’s output links.

o   Chapter 5 covers the control plane functions of the network layer — thenetwork-wide logic that controls how a datagram is routed along an end-to-endpath of routers from the source host to the destination host. As in previouseditions, routing algorithms are covered, as well as routing protocols (with anupdated treatment of BGP) used in today’s internet. A significant new sectionon the SDN control plane has been added, where routing and other functions areimplemented in so-called SDN controllers.

o   Chapter 6, which now covers the link layer, contains an updatedtreatment of ethernet and data center networking.

o   Chapter 7, which covers wireless and mobile networking, containsupdated material on 802.11 (so-called “WiFi”) networks and cellular networks, including 4G and LTE.

  • REVISED - Significant newmaterialinvolving end-of-chapter problems has beenadded. As with all previous editions, homework problems have been revised, added, and removed.
  • A balanced presentationfocuses on the internet as a specific motivating example of a networkand also introduces students to protocols in a more theoretical context.
  • A chapter on wireless andmobilityincludes insight into 802.11 and coverage ofad hoc networking.
  • Principles and Practiceboxesthroughout demonstrate real-world applicationsof the principles studied.
  • Case History boxesare sprinkled in to help tell the story of the history anddevelopment of computer networking.
  • Material on applicationprogramming developmentis included, along withnumerous programming assignments.
  • A highly developed artprogramenhances the descriptions of concepts.
